aight so i’ve just recently got into UFC, i’ve watched UFC 94, 95, 96 and this morning i watched UFC 97 which happened last night

i was a tad dissapointed with Anderson Silva last night, although in his defence Leites contributed very little in making the fight exciting. i was loving the crowd chanting “GSP GSP GSP” though, Georges St.Pierre is pretty amazing, i was impressed at how easily he dominated BJ Penn, who is himself considered one of the top pound for pound

and it looks like Liddell’s UFC career came to an end at UFC 97, stopped by Rua, who if i remember correctly had a great deal of trouble taking out the older more tired Mark Coleman a few UFC’s ago

If Lesnar defeats Mir at UFC 100, i’d love to see Lesnar get it on with Cheick Kongo, who dominated Hardonk at UFC 97

anyway this is the start of me watching UFC, i’ll gain more knowledge on fighters as i continue to watch it, this is just the thread to discuss everything UFC related

  3. Damn I thought I got on drunk last night and made this thread lol

Well I got all the main card picks last correct

Picked Cane win and he did

Kongo won which I am happy about always been a fan

Soszynski I picked him also. Funny thing I said he got sick submissions and ten seconds later he wins by submission. There was a few Polish guys with us including me so we cheered hard for him.

I also picked Rau to win by TKO and this got everybody shocked. I was liked Chuck is done in MMA he can no longer fight with the big names. And everyone else is like this you see him against Coleman he barely did shit against an old man so I was like you watch and then boom Chuck gets caught and it is over. Said to see him go but he should really consider retirement before he becomes a Ken Shamrock. This fight also won be a drink 😎

And the main event is probably the worst fight I ever seen in my life man. And thats all I gonna say about it.

Quote from Dana on the main event :

“I can honestly tell you that I’ve never put on an event that I was embarrassed to be at until tonight. I want to publicly apologize to all the fans…. I apologize. I personally apologize for what happened tonight. You guys know, this isn’t what the UFC was built on and this isn’t the way the fights usually go. Listen, any night you can have an off-night. When a guy is that talented and can literally end a fight whenever he wants to, wow.”

Quote from Dana on Chuck :

At the end of the day, I care about these guys. I don’t want to see anybody stick around too long. You’re never going to see Chuck Liddell on the canvas again…. Tonight was the end of an era. One of the greatest guys in the sport just fought his last fight tonight.”

Here are the special fight bonuses for UFC 97:

Fight of the Night — Sam Stout vs. Matt Wiman

Knockout of the Night — Mauricio “Shogun” Rua

Submission of the Night – Krzysztof Soszynski

  4. The Ultimate Fighting Championship’s sophomore event in Montreal set a new North American MMA attendance record with 21,451 attendees, who combined for a staggering $4.9 million gate.

MMAjunkie.com (http://www.mmajunkie.com) learned of the numbers from UFC President Dana White in the post-UFC 97 press conference.

If the numbers are made official by the Quebec Athletic Commission, UFC 97 will have outdrawn Montreal’s first record-breaking event, UFC 83, by just 61 people.

UFC 83 took place a year ago on April 19, 2008. The show, headlined by then-UFC welterweight champion Matt Serra vs. Canadian fighter Georges St. Pierre, drew 21,390 fans. The event set a then-new North American MMA record previously held by UFC 68, which took place in Columbus, Ohio, in 2007. That show, which featured then-UFC heavyweight champion Tim Sylvia vs. Randy Couture, drew 19,049 fans.

However, this year’s event couldn’t top UFC 83’s live gate of $5.1 million. However, UFC 97 does rank fourth in UFC and North American MMA history, falling less than $400,000 short of the record $5.4 million gate registered with UFC 66 and the highly anticipated rematch between Chuck Liddell and Tito Ortiz.

The top five UFC and North American MMA gates now include:

    * UFC 66 (Liddell vs. Ortiz II): $5,397,300 gate (12,191 attendance)
    * UFC 83 (St. Pierre vs. Serra II): $5,100,000 gate (21,390 attendance)
    * UFC 79 (St. Pierre vs. Hughes): $4,994,050 gate (9,704 attendance)
    * UFC 97 (Silva vs. Leites): $4,900,000 gate (21,451 attendance)*
    * UFC 91 (Couture vs. Lesnar): $4,815,675 gate (13,224 attendance)

    * – Total not verified by regulatory body

UFC 97 is another blockbuster event for the world’s top MMA promotion, which thus far, has proven to be essentially recession-proof; three of the UFC’s top five gates of all time have now taken place in the past year – despite the decline of the U.S. and other economies around the world.

UFC 97 featured UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva vs. Thales Leites and Chuck Liddell vs. Mauricio “Shogun” Rua. The event sold out in just one week.
    ————————————————————————————-
With more than 70 professional contests between them, featured UFC 97 preliminary card fighters Denis Kang (32-11-1 MMA, 1-1 UFC) and Xavier Foupa-Pokam (20-10 MMA, 0-1 UFC) were each looking to make their marks on the middleweight division.

While Kang outworked his French foe en route to his first UFC win, it was another familiar name, Nate Quarry (11-3 MMA, 6-2 UFC) that made a real splash in the middleweight division in his win over Jason MacDonald (21-12 MMA, 5-5 UFC).

The bouts capped off UFC 97’s preliminary card from the Bell Centre in Montreal.

With “Professoor X” presenting a myriad of problems on the feet, Kang intelligently elected to work the fight to the floor as often as possible. Foupa-Pokam proved unable to resist the strategy. Unfortunately, Kang proved just as unable to finish the bout from the floor.

Foupa-Pokam tried to work back to the feet with every available opening, scoring with kicks and knees in spots, but Kang muscled him back to the floor each time. The strategy didn’t please the packed arena, but the dedication to a smart gameplan proved beneficial to Kang in a clear, though uninspiring, unanimous-decision win.

After losing his UFC debut, Kang admitted he felt pressured to perform well.

“It feels good to get that (UFC) win,” Kang said. “I have to admit I was a little bit nervous. I don’t want to say this match was a do-or-die (fight), but I said to myself that it was.”

Foupa-Pokam had won his past seven-straight contests before falling short in his UFC debut.

“TUF” vets Quarry and Herman disappoint pro-Canadian crowd

The gameplans for middleweight striker Quarry and grappler MacDonald appeared obvious. But while most expected Quarry to try and keep the bout on the feet, “The Rock” had different plans.

Quarry clinched early and reversed a takedown attempt to land on top of his foe. Quarry then postured up and delivered a barrage of forearms, elbows and punches that opened up a gash on MacDonald’s head. With MacDonald pinned on the cage and the attack unrelenting, MacDonald was saved halfway through the opening frame.

While Quarry looked comfortable on the ground, he admitted after the contest he was only safe while he was in top position.

“I knew I hit him with a good elbow and cut him,” Quarry said. “From where the cut was, I knew the blood would get in his eyes and mess with his mind.

“I just knew that I didn’t want to be on the bottom against him.”

Quarry bounces back from a November loss to Demian Maia in emphatic fashion, while the always-tough MacDonald has now dropped two straight.

Canadian UFC veteran David Loiseau (18-9 MMA, 4-4 UFC) started the evening as the night’s feel-good story, but there’s no chance “The Crow” will felt good after his bout with Ed Herman (15-7 MMA, 4-4 UFC). A combination of punishing knees from the clinch and brutal ground-and-pound on the ground left no doubt as to the winner of the contest.

Loiseau found himself on his back throughout the contest, and Herman remained relentless in his attack for 15 minutes. Loiseau valiantly pushed on, but the bout was highly one-sided in nature.

With a pro-Loiseau crowd silenced by the final frame, Herman earned a dominating unanimous-decision win.

After the bout, Herman said the fight played out just as he had planned.

“I feel like I did a lot of things well,” Herman said. “[Loiseau] is a lot quicker than me on the feet, so I wanted to take him down.” The win snaps a two-fight losing streak for Herman, while Loiseau has a three-fight win streak snapped in his first UFC bout in two-and-a-half years.

Bocek beats the clock, Bielkheden; Grant edges Chonan in debut

After an initial unsuccessful takedown attempt, Canadian Mark Bocek (7-2 MMA, 3-2 UFC) put Swedish lightweight David Bielkheden (13-7 MMA, 1-2 UFC) on his back and never let up.

Bocek worked twice to sidemount as Bielkheden struggled to maintain guard. The second pass offered Bocek a chance to strike and pass to full mount. Once in the position, a series of strikes from the top found their mark for Bocek as time expired. Bielkheden rolled to avoid damage, but Bocek pounced.

Despite the clock ticking off the final seconds of the opening frame, Bocek locked in the rear-naked choke, forcing Bielkheden to tap with just three seconds left in the opening frame.

Following the bout, Bocek said the experience of fighting in his native country was a good one.

“David’s a tough opponent,” Bocek said. “What I took away from this match is I have to keep improving and to never be satisfied.

“The fans are awesome, and I try to give them the best show I can.”

Bocek has now earned two-straight submission wins in the UFC, while Bielkheden has alternated wins and losses in his first three bouts for the organization.

Canadian UFC newcomer T.J. Grant (14-2 MMA, 1-0 UFC) received a deafening roar as he entered the cage, and the welterweight put on a performance worthy of the support against the always tough Ryo Chonan (15-10 MMA, 1-3 UFC).

A grappling contest throughout the 15-minute affair, the two fighters each took turns earning dominant positions and exchanging ground-and-pound strikes. Each was able to work free from the other’s guard in spots, but neither was close to ending the fight at any point. Instead the action took relentless turns of momentum throughout and left a winner difficult to decide.

In the end, two of the three judges in attendance awarded the bout to Grant, who earned the split-decision win in his UFC debut.

“My strategy was to use my wrestling and strike when I had to,” Grant said after the win. “[Chonan] got on top of me a few times. It was a tought fight.

“When [the crowd] was cheering for me, I was like, ‘I can’t lose this fight.'”

The win was the Canadian’s fifth-straight overall, while Chonan has now dropped two-straight bouts and may soon find himself resuming his eight-year career back in Japan.

“The Ultimate Fighter 8” cast members Eliot Marshall (7-1 MMA, 2-0 UFC) and Vinicius Magalhaes (2-4 MMA, 0-2 UFC) – both defeated by Ryan Bader during their time on the show – opened up the evening’s activities to a restless crowd.

Minor breaks in action were met with audible disapproval from the Bell Centre crowd from the opening moments of the bout. Fortunately for the already nearly full arena, the action didn’t stall too often.

The two jiu-jitsu experts traded shots from the feet for the majority of the contest, and Marshall issued the greater volume of offense. Magalhaes worked Marshall to the floor briefly in the second round and very late in the third, but the flashes of grappling weren’t enough to sway the outcome.

Marshall took advantage of a clearly fatigued Magalhaes to earn the unanimous-decision win.

“I felt like I hit him more than he hit me,” Marshall said following the bout. “The strategy was keep it on the feet. I knew he would fade.”

Marshall has now won his first two bouts in the UFC after being eliminated in the “TUF 8” semi-finals, while Magalhaes has dropped three-straight official contests.

erm, he wasn’t really, thales leites seemed too reluctant to actually attack silva, and silva was looking to counter leites when he did attack, but if leites didn’t attack then silva can’t counter…one thing that became a constant feat in the fight was leties would almost seem to voluntarily drop to his back, and would want anderson silva to go into half guard, but silva wouldn’t he didn’t want to attack leites on the floor, he wanted it standing, leites genuinely went down like that about 20-25 times, and silva would end up looking at him and sighing and walking away

this is how i saw it, dunno if szuter or anyone else saw it differently

  36. The Ultimate Fighting Championship will apparently scrap a UFC 101 bout between former UFC light heavyweight champion Forrest Griffin (16-5 MMA, 7-3 UFC) and top contender Thiago Silva (13-1 MMA, 4-1 UFC) in favor of a Griffin vs. Anderson Silva (24-4 MMA, 9-0 UFC) match-up.

Sources close to the organization today told MMAjunkie.com (http://www.mmajunkie.com) a meeting was held last week to discuss the Anderson Silva vs. Griffin bout and that verbal agreements are now in place.

Anderson Silva, fresh off a heavily criticized title defense over Thales Leites at UFC 97, will now move up a weight class for the non-title fight with Griffin.

Although not officially announced by the organization, UFC 101 takes place Aug. 8, most likely at the Wachovia Center in Philadelphia. The event also features a UFC lightweight title fight between title-holder B.J. Penn and top contender Kenny Florian.

Rumors of the potential Anderson Silva vs. Griffin bout began showing up last week after some cryptic emails were sent to a variety of MMA news outlets. The flames were fanned when seemingly unsubstantiated reports of the rumored fight were posted on a few MMA message boards over the weekend.

Although the fight is now close to official (but not signed), a source close to Thiago Silva told MMAjunkie.com the fighter was unaware his fight with Griffin had been scratched. Even as of this morning, the fighter was apparently under the impression he was still scheduled to fight Griffin at UFC 101.

MMAjunkie.com first reported in March that the UFC had lined up the Thiago Silva vs. Griffin fight, which many considered a bout that would determined the light heavyweight division’s No. 1 contender after Quinton Jackson. Jackson is scheduled to fight the winner of a UFC 98 bout between current champ Evans and Lyoto Machida later this summer.

The source isn’t sure if Thiago Silva will remain on the UFC 101 card with a new opponent or if he’ll be shifted to another event.

As for Anderson Silva, UFC officials wasted no time scheduling him for his next fight. He most recently fought on April 18 as a headliner for UFC 97. He entered the fight as a significant favorite, and though he won a lopsided unanimous-decision victory, Anderson Silva was criticized for what seemed a conservative game plan in which he opted not to follow Leites, a Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt, to the ground.

UFC President Dana White called the fight “embarrassing” and “disappointing,” and he openly questioned if Anderson Silva needed another challenge at 205 pounds. The fighter, who picked up a UFC record ninth straight victory with the Leites win, moved up to 205 pounds in July 2008 for a non-title fight with James Irvin, and the Brazilian striker has made no secret of his intentions to move up a weight class again in the future.

    The UFC has apparently obliged.

    Naw

After having his expected bout with Forrest Griffin pulled out from underneath his feet earlier this afternoon, Brazilian bomber Thiago Silva has his sights set on a new challenge in the form of “The Dean of Mean” Keith Jardine this evening.

The two are expected to meet up at UFC 102 according to recently published report from John Morgan at MMAjunkie.com.

While nothing has been officially announced of UFC 102 by the organization at this point, it is expected to be headlined by a heavyweight showdown between former UFC heavyweight champions Randy Couture and Antonio Rodrigo “Minotauro” Nogueira and to take place on August 29 in Portland, Oregon.

Thiago Silva is fresh off of a knockout loss courtesy of upcoming light heavyweight championship challenger Lyoto Machida at UFC 94. Prior to that the American Top Team trained fighter had gone undefeated in his professional mixed martial arts career with four consecutive victories in the octagon.

A win over a contender like Jardine is likely to put Silva right back in the mix in the UFC’s 205 pound division.

Jardine always just seems a couple wins away from a title shot in the UFC. After his impressive victory over Forrest Griffin he was brutalized at the hands of Houston Alexander, he rebounded from that loss with a decision victory over Chuck Liddell only to be knocked stiff at the hands of Wanderlei Silva, and most recently Jardine out pointed Brandon Vera but came up on the losing end of a hard fought decision to Quinton “Rampage” Jackson at UFC 96.

If Jardine can look impressive against Silva at UFC 102 he would certainly be one win away from a long sought after championship bout for the third time in his career.

yeah i am, i cannot fucking wait, hatton now looks better than he has ever looked, but pacquiao was so dominant over oscar de la hoya, it’s going to be an amazing match, they are the sort of fighters that will have an exciting fight

also, did you hear floyd mayweather has come out of retirement cos he has that will to fight again, he’ sgonna square off against juan manuel marquez (the guy who alot of people believe beat pacquiao twice), that will be an amazing match, this division of fighters is the most exciting in the world right now, and i’m sure there will be some excelent fights in the future between not only these four but others as well

  40. In a bout that will more than likely determine the #1 contender for the UFC’s middleweight title, Demian Maia will take on Nate Marquardt at UFC 102 which is tentatively scheduled for August 29th and will be held in Portland, Oregon.

MMAJunkie.com was the first to report the bout between the two middleweight dynamos on its website earlier today.

Speculation has been running rampant about who would face Anderson Silva next with the winner of Michael Bisping and Dan Henderson also under consideration after their bout at UFC 100 in July.

Marquardt is coming off an impressive third round TKO over Wilson Gouveia at UFC 95. Maia scored his tenth win in as many fights as well as his fifth submission victory in as many UFC fights on the same card against former WEC middleweight title contender Chael Sonnen. This fight has been talked about for some time now as well as both men seemed to have valid claims to be the #1 contender to Silva’s title.

Maia may have been hurt a bit by the poor performance put on by fellow Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt Thales Leites at UFC 97 against Silva. Leites showed absolutely no desire to fight Silva and many fans and pundits alike believed that Maia although a more talented fighter than Leites was too similar and that the UFC would want to avoid a repeat performance in a Silva title fight.

Marquardt has had a shot at Silva back at UFC 73 in July of 2007 but was stopped by TKO in the first round. He has seemed to improve all aspects of his game while under the tutelage of Greg Jackson and many believe he would offer Silva a much better fight the second time around. Marquardt is 3-1 since his fight with Silva losing a controversial split decision to Leites at UFC 85 in June of 2008, Marquardt was penalized two points during that bout. One point was deducted for kneeing in the head while he was still on the ground and the second point was deducted for Marquardt hitting Leites on the back of the head. Referee Herb Dean was heavily criticized for taking that point away.

UFC 102 is to be headlined by a battle of former UFC heavyweight champions as Randy Couture will face former PRIDE superstar Antonio Rodrigo Noguiera. Also set to appear on this card are local fighters Chael Sonnen who will take on Wilson Gouveia, a returning Chris Leben will battle Jake Rosholt and Junior Dos Santos will battle Justin McCully.

    ————————————————————————————
After losing in the finals in last season’s light heavyweight tournament on The Ultimate Fighter, the UFC still had high hopes for Vinny Magalhaes. After all, the man is a black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu as well as a two time Brazilian National heavyweight champion.

However, after suffering a second consecutive loss in the UFC to Eliot Marshall at UFC 97 on April 18, Magalhaes will be looking for a new place to fight.

According to the latest print edition of “The Wrestling Observer”, the UFC has decided to release Magalhaes mainly because the company is trying to build new contenders in each weight class. The fighters who don’t have potential according to the UFC will be sent packing.

Magalhaes entered season 8 of The Ultimate Fighter with plenty of hype due to his impressive background in BJJ. He was widely considered one of the favorites to win the light heavyweight tournament. While on the show, he went on to defeat Lance Evans, Jules Bruchez, and Krzysztof Soszynski. In the finals he ran into the undefeated Ryan Bader who got the win with an impressive TKO victory in just a little over two minutes; ending Vinny’s dream to become the The Ultimate Fighter.

  46. PRIDE and K-1 superstar Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic (24-6-2 MMA, 1-2 UFC) says he is making his return to the UFC following a 20-month hiatus from the sport’s biggest organization.

Filipovic stated in his MMA-ID blog that he was hoping for three fights this year in the UFC, and a subsequent press release from the Croatian striker’s official website confirmed the news.

Filipovic claims he will be fighting Mostapha Al Turk (6-4 MMA, 0-1 UFC) at UFC 99 in Germany, and an additional report from The Wrestling Observer cites UFC President Dana White as having confirmed the bout.

Al Turk had originally been slated to meet debuting American Top Team heavyweight Todd Duffee (4-0 MMA, 0-0 UFC) on the preliminary card of the June 13 event in Cologne, Germany.

The official fight card for the event on the UFC’s website still shows Al Turk vs. Duffee on the evening’s schedule.

Filipovic’s original MMA-ID blog is included, unedited, below:

    Back in the UFC

So we have some big news!

I decided to fight in the UFC again, because of the stronger competition in the heavyweight division. My next opponent will be Mustapha Al-Turk.

I didn’t do well in my first three appearances – I wasn’t myself. By returning to the cage I want to prove that I can still fight at highest level, no matter when or where.

It’s hard to talk about concrete plans, but I would really like to fight at least three times this year. I wish to fight against quality opponents and to fight my way up to a title shot but for now, I’ll focus only on my next fight and after that we’ll see what’s going to be on the menu next.

I want to say thank you Mr. Dana White for your interest and for an invitation back to the UFC. I owe you a lot from our first deal, and I’ll make it up to you.

Thanks everyone for supporting me all the way – we are back in business!

    Mirko

The press release from Filipovic’s official website is also included, unedited, below:

PRESS RELEASE: Cro Cop Back In UFC

These days the boys from Cro Cop team are training in full force. After a long break and highly demanding recovery process, Mirko Cro Cop is ready to fight in MMA again.

All problems with injuries are history and Cro Cop is very optimistic to start another chapter in his career: “I feel great, the recovery process is going well and we train at high intensity now. I never had such a strong desire to prove myself and I’ll climb up again, or die trying.”

Mirko’s next fight is set for June 13th in Germany, which means that he’s back in the UFC, a place that he didn’t have his best moments: “I decided to fight in the UFC again, because of the stronger competition in the heavyweight division. My next opponent will be Mustapha Al-Turk. I didn’t do well in my first three appearances – I wasn’t myself. By returning to the cage I want to prove that I can still fight at highest level, no matter when or where,” claims Cro Cop.

UFC 99 will be Cro Cop’s first fight this year with the possibility of three fights coming by years end. “It’s hard to talk about concrete plans, but I would really like to fight at least three times this year. I wish to fight against quality opponents and to fight my way up to a title shot but for now, I’ll focus only on my next fight and after that we’ll see what’s going to be on the menu next,” says Cro Cop. Although the UFC 99 card looks stacked, it seems that the UFC officials can see the benefits of hiring a top European fighter for their first ever UFC show in Germany.

“I want to say thank you Mr. Dana White for your interest and for an invitation back to the UFC. I owe you a lot from our first deal, and I’ll make it up to you,” promises Cro Cop.

All news related to Mirko Cro Cop’s career are posted on Mirko’s official MMA-ID profile on http://www.mma-id.com/CROCOP and Mirko’s official homepage http://www.mirko-crocop.com.

    Yours truly,
    The CROCOP Team

Sources close to Duffee were unaware of any potential changes to the UFC 99 card when contacted by MMAjunkie.com (http://www.mmajunkie.com).

Filipovic originally entered the UFC as a highly regarded heavyweight in February 2007. The devastating striker entered the UFC on a four-fight win streak that included victories over Josh Barnett, Wanderlei Silva, Hidehiko Yoshida and Ikuhisa Minowa.

After earning a victory in his UFC debut over Eddie Sanchez, Filipovic then suffered a devastating knockout at the hands of Gabriel Gonzaga and a lackluster decision loss to Cheick Kongo. The UFC and Filipovic parted ways at that time, thought both insisted “Cro Cop” would eventually return to the organization.

Filipovic has since earned TKO wins over Hong Man Choi and Tatsuya Mizuno in Japan, while battling through repeated illegal groin shots to settle for a no contest against Alistair Overeem.

  47. Veteran heavyweight and once again rising contender Cheick Kongo (14-4-1 MMA, 7-2 UFC) will replace Heath Herring (28-14 MMA, 2-3 UFC) and fight Cain Velasquez (5-0 MMA, 3-0 UFC) at next month’s UFC 99 event.

Kongo posted the change on his Facebook early Wednesday morning, and the UFC has since made the adjustment official.

UFC 99 takes place on June 13 at the Lanxess Arena in Cologne, Germany.

On Tuesday the UFC announced that an injury forced Herring out of the co-main-event fight. However, a report from MMA FanHouse stated the fighter instead was dealing with a sickness that’s left him out of training for the past couple weeks.

It is currently unknown if the Kongo vs. Velasquez bout will remain in the same slot on the evening’s schedule.

As far as drawing power in Germany and the potential impact on the heavyweight title picture, Kongo is arguably an upgrade. However, his UFC 99 appearance would be his second fight in just two months. He most recently topped Antoni Hardonk with a second-round TKO at UFC 97.

It was the third consecutive victory for Kongo, whom UFC President Dana White recently said was back in the title picture and possibly just a win or two away from a shot at the belt.

A win over Velasquez, one of the sport’s most promising heavyweight prospects, would give Kongo a solid case for a title shot. After all, Velasquez is a remarkable 5-0 with five TKO stoppages. All but his most recent one (over Denis Stojnic at UFC Fight Night 17) came in the first round.

UFC 99 marks the organization’s debut in Germany, which has welcomed the UFC with a lukewarm reception. Minors have been banned from attending the event, and local press has demonized the sport. However, ticket sales are solid for the event, which features a main event between former UFC champion Rich Franklin and former PRIDE title-holder Wanderlei Silva (at a catch-weight of 182 pounds).

  49. i just finished watching it, i thought hughes/serra would be much more exciting seeing as that fight was so personal, i was a little let down with it

machida is so unorthodox, so difficult to fight against, and it was proven as rashad hardly touched him without getting tagged himself. i wonder now if machida will face rampage, or if rashad and rampage will fight since it was scheduled for 98 but rampage pulled out.

  50. UFC 98: “Evans vs. Machida” from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, has officially wrapped, which means that it’s time for those select fighters who went above and beyond in their respective fights to get a little extra grease for their efforts.

To the tune of $60,000 each.

The promotion dished out its standard post-fight monetary bonuses to four out of the 22 fighters on the card. And it shouldn’t come as a shock whose wallets are leaving “Sin City” a little heavier.

In addition to their base salaries, the UFC awarded welterweight warriors Matt Hughes and Matt Serra “Fight of the Night” for their gritty back-and-forth 170-pound war. It was a bout that saw Hughes survive an early scare to come back and out-muscle Serra en route to a unanimous decision victory.

Both fighters certainly made the most of their opportunity.

Lyoto “The Dragon” Machida, who was an early favorite coming into this fight, shocked the pay-per-view audience with a devastating stoppage over previously unbeaten Rashad Evans.

It not only earned him “Knockout of the Night,” but the dubious honor of being the first man to stop Evans in his career.

“Submission of the Night” went to WEC alum Brock Larson for his relatively quick work over last minute replacement Mike Pyle. Larson locked in a suffocating arm triangle choke to move himself up welterweight ladder..

Here are the special fight bonuses for UFC 98:

Fight of the Night — Matt Serra vs. Matt Hughes

Knockout of the Night — Lyoto Machida

Submission of the Night – Brock Larson

  53. The 2005 Pride FC Middleweight Grand Prix winner, Mauricio “Shogun” Rua, earlier this week did indeed sign a bout agreement to challenge UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Lyoto Machida, which will more than likely take place at UFC 104 from the Staples Center in Los Angeles, Calif., on Oct. 24.

SuperLutas.com.br was able to confirm the rumored match up with sources close to the Brazilian’s camp.

Rua is coming off a first round technical knockout of former 205-pound champion, Chuck Liddell, at UFC 97: “Redemption” last month. He defeated Mark Coleman via third round technical knockout in a lackluster performance earlier this year at UFC 93: “Franklin vs. Henderson” to earn a crack at the “Iceman.”

It’s perhaps not the match up that most fans expected, especially when UFC President Dana White revealed over the weekend that Quinton “Rampage” Jackson would be the first to challenge Machida for his newly-won world title. But that all went out the window a few days later when Jackson apparently pressed UFC officials to settle a score with Rashad Evans via The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 10 first rather than compete to get his belt back.

That left Machida — who flattened Evans at UFC 98 to win the belt — all of a sudden without a number one contender … until now.

Keep in mind that White did not announce the bout yesterday during a media conference call because he indicated that not all bout agreements were finalized. That more than likely means Machida — who is currently celebrating his big win on a beach near Belem — may still have to agree to the fight and formalize it with a signature.

    ————————————————————————————

After more than three years of fighting outside the promotion, former UFC welterweight number one contender and ex-Icon Sport middleweight champion, Frank Trigg, has been invited back to the UFC for another run at 170-pound glory.

The UFC made the announcement earlier today on its official Web site.

“Twinkle Toes” (19-6) is perhaps best known to UFC fans for his two defeats at the hands of former division champion Matt Hughes — both by rear naked choke. First at UFC 45 and then again at UFC 52.

What made his second loss to Hughes so memorable was the gritty and improbable comeback by then-champion Hughes after Trigg delivered an unintentional low blow.

The former University of Oklahoma wrestler attempted to rebound at UFC 54 against Georges St. Pierre, but met a similar fate at the hands of the current champ after being dominated from the opening horn.

The Godfather of Triggonomics didn’t spend much time mourning the losses. In addition to commentating for the now-defunct PRIDE organization, Trigg put together a solid 7-2 run outside of Zuffa, including wins over Jason “Mayhem” Miller and Kazuo Misaki.

Trigg was last seen outpointing a very game Danny Babcock in the main event of the XCF: “Rumble in Racetown” event back on February 14. Trigg got off to a rocky start in the first round, but soon found his range and took command in the second and third rounds, including a late knockdown in the final minute of the bout to take the unanimous decision win.

No opponent or event has been named for Trigg’s return, but no question the 37-year-old veteran of the sport will be looking to make an immediate impact.

Didnt post this but it has been announced that Shogun Rau gets the next title shot which happens in September I believe at UFC 104 vs Machida

    ———————————————————————————–

Last night Strikeforce put on a event. There one of my favorite MMA promotions other than UFC. Was shocked that Arlovski got knocked out in under 30 secs. Was happy that Nick Diaz submitted Scott Smith, He is one of my favorite. The main event was Lawler vs Shields and Shields won by a submission in the first round which was a shock to me was expecting a TKO from Lawler but it didnt happen. Other fight on the card was Randleman vs Whitehead boring fight kind of got interesting in the third round. And Riggs vs Baroni and I gotta give credit to Baroni even though he lost he didnt get knocked out which many time it looked like he was going to.

Anyways later today WEC 41 is on and I am looking forward to that

sort off but since no one else deserves or those that do are not available since Rampage is off filming the new season of TUF and is already booked to fight Rashad once the show is done . That really leaves only Rau on top since he already got two wins this year. One boring fight and the other an awesome knock out over Liddell. Rampage was originally supposed to fight Evans instead of Machida but pulled out since he didnt have enough time to get ready because he just recently fought Jardine. So I believe the winner of Machida vs Rau will probably fight the winner of Evans vs Jackson unless the decide to give Anderson Silva a shot if he beats Forrest Griffin in August

  67. Alright I was a bit disappointed with some of the fights last night

    Davis vs Hardy

In my opinion Hardy lost that fight but he won the split decision

    Uno vs Fisher

Fairly even fight could of went either way picked Fisher originally

    Saunders vs Swick

I was really hoping for Saunders to win this fight but in the back of my head I knew Swick would take since this was a huge step up for Saunders. Swick is now 9-1 in the UFC be should of faced someone like Fitch or Koscheck and one of the top Welterweights

    Al Turk vs Cro Cop

Was really hoping to see the same Crop Cop that was kicking people to the head in Pride. That didnt happen and he one due to a eye poke and the dumb ref didnt even stop the fight and let the fight go on which lead to a TKO win for Cro Cop. Now here comes the funny thing Cro Cop had already signed with another organization before this fight a three fight deal with DREAM. Lets just say Dana White is fucking pissed

    Kongo vs Velasquez

Now all I can say I really underestimated Velasquez he completely dominated Kongo. Once Kongo got taken down by Velasquez he didnt know what to do and Velazquez took the decision.

    Silva vs Franklin

Now this fight I was really looking forward to. Silva is my favorite fighter and it was a fairly good fight I thought I was really close and it could of been anyones fight but clearly Franklin had the fight which he won my decision

yer the heavyweight division is kind of lacking someone with his raw power, if he can keep winning on power alone for now, it’s true when he develops and gains other aspects, he will be unstoppable

  99. Brock will not gain any respect because he was a former Pro Wrestler that got a title shot after his second fight in UFC. It shows you he knows what he doing. Mir was knotted up way before the first slam. Mir credentials are nice, but if you going against somebody with raw power, pure strength, and speed like gazelle; you have no chance to win.

    THE SPIDER

it just goes to show how fucking good anderson silva is

i mean straight away in the fight, like the first minute, forrest griffin did one of his leg kicks that he utilizes but anderson silva fucking caught his leg! i mean after that forrest must have thought fuck i can’t be getting caught like that, so he took away what is probably forrest’s most deadly weapon

i would love to see silva vs machida, but at the moment it isn’t looking likely at all, they are training partners and silva obviously didn’t like the idea when it was bought up in the press conference after 101

dana white, in the 101 post press conference said it would be anderson silva in a rematch against dan henderson, as henderson is coming off the back of one of the most brutal KO’s in the octagon of recent times when he fucked up bisping

henderson was beaten pretty convincingly by anderson in there first fight, and i can’t see silva losing a second fight between the 2

ufc 103 will have the fight between franklin and belfort, i’m not too familiar with vitor belfort, but i have seen rich franklin in 4 fights and in none of them did he impress me, those fights were the 2 against anderson silva, the one against dan henderson and the ufc 99 fight with wanderlei.

    i’m rambling now. bye

just watched it, kimbo lost, but it seemed like he didn’t lose credibility, and i kind of have a new respect for him, especially when he said, he’s not a ufc fighter yet, he’s here to learn and try to become one

and that roy nelson dude is annoying lol, yeah he won, but he was a prick afterwards, boasting and shit, dana summed it up well, saying he won but he was hitting him like a little girl hits her dad or something, and he did JUST enough to win without being hit lol

Rumor is that Kimbo will fight in the UFC event in December when they crown the TUF winner. Plus judging by the last episode he might get another shot since it looks like Marcus will be out of his next fight but it may just be hype to keep the high ratings. those matches are big enough to make 3 ufc events, with all of them in the one event, that should be incredible if it goes down

szuter, did u see the last ultimate fighter, those two dudes slugging it out loool, i was laughing so bad, they do not look physically ready for the ufc, after the 1st round!, they were tired as hell just standing there in front of each other with no defence just pounding each other’s heads, it was a good fight in terms of entertinment, but in the ufc they’d get fucked up quickly!

oh and also, what do you think of cain velazquez?

edit – so i just looked it up, and anderson silva requires more time due to an elbow injury, and machida and shogun won’t happen at 108, so it’ll probably be carwin/lesnar and then evans/thiago silva, which is still a pretty good card

  199. so ufc 108 is done…paul daly is now my favourite brit mma fighter, dan hardy can take a back seat for now, cos paul daly has some lethal power

evans/silva fight sucked, rounds 1 and 2 was just evans wrestling him, but what evans failed to realise is that while wrestling is effective it’s not exciting nor will it knock an opponent out…oh and LOOOOOL in the third round thiago silva was soooo trying to emulate what anderson silva did against forrest griffin, i mean he almost did with a hard right, but the way he was holding his hands down and dancing looked soooooo dumb LOL

so ecans wins but looked unimpressive to me, tho it’s not as if silva was robbed cos he was just as unimpressive, if either went against shogun they’d get fudged

shogun to beat machida! and then we enter the shogun era which could be around for a while

    Reply
  200. I dont know I really enjoyed the fight between Rashad and Thiago.
    Rashad had awesome takedowns
    Also great entrance music

But in the third round why would Silva be showboating like that when he is losing the fight. He should of be the more aggressive fighter. After a while he was but he never got to finish Evans but he was damn near close.

Speaking of Daley another impressive win in the octagon for him. Arthur, I been a fan of Daley’s for a while. Much more than Hardy and Bisping. Who both should lose the next fight.

Really impressed with Stout he put on a show.

Jim Miller fight was great too

Disappointed with Yvel I hoped he would do much better than that Dos Santos deserves a title shot soon

    – Most happy with Wanderlei getting a win. He is my favorite fighter. Bring on Akiyama.
    – Dissapointed with Nog. But he will be back. Cain is for real hope he gets a shot at Lesnar soon.
    – Sotiropoulos really impressed me with his ground game. He deserves a big fight next
    – Jardine is really dissapointing he as of lately does he belong in the UFC? Maybe as a gatekeeper on Spike?
    – Cro Cop glad he won but it was a cut against a give that took the fight on 48 hours notice.
    – Glad the Polish Experiment won but it was a cut due to a headbut.

i think the reason the first fight was such a bore was that BJ Penn didn’t show up, i think if bj shows up this time, he’ll beat frankie edgar no problem

i’m hoping this is going to be one of the couture fights where he absolutely dominates his opponent, like he did against chuck the first time, against tito ortiz, and like he did against tim sylvia. about a year ago i wasn’t much of a couture fan, but recently i went back and watched some fights, including those 3 i just mentioned, and man, i can’t wait to see randy couture fight now. the tim sylvia fight had the hairs on the back of my neck standing, it was so exciting.

I’m a Brock fan, but Cain has the best chance against Brock because Brock like to smooth his opponent. Cain is best on his back.

Lot of great KO/TKO, an amazing comeback victory last year over Chael Sonnen (who was on a banned substance at the time. He did mess around a bit in a few fights were he took it easy and just fought till a decision. But when he fights seriously he is one of the most dangerous fighters in MMA.

chris lytle retired with a great submission win over dan hardy, he was getting the better of him standing up, and dan hardy panicked and went for a takedown, which against chris lytle is stupid cos he has a great ground game, within 10 seconds of the takedown, lytle had a deep guillotine and hardy tapped.

thats 4 straight losses for hardy, but lorenzo fertitta said he isn’t going to cut him cos he loves guys that WAR. we’ll see what happens.

  375. UFC 140 this past weekend was awesome one of the best events I ever watched . No boring fights some quick knockouts one was 7 secs another one was 35. Jones choked out Machida in a LHW title defense. Mir broke Big Nogs arm not something I liked seeing especially being a fan of Nog. But the submission was pretty amazing. Tito Ortiz possibly had his last UFC fight he has one fight on the contract but the UFC might not give him the final fight.
There were 12 fights in total all great .
Awesome got some autographs from Wanderlei Silva , Dan Hardy , Ben Henderson , and Rory MacDonald. Sean Sherk as well he didn’t have a signing but I ran into him outside the ACC.

  376. hendo vs rua was an amazing fight, i was so into it, definately one of the best fights i’ve seen since becoming a fan of MMA.

i dnt think anybody can stop jon jones, i think rashad will give him a run for his money, i reckon rashad will take him down or die trying.

well pumped for ufc 141, lesnar vs the reem, gonna be epic, if brock doesn’t take him down it won’t take long for reem to knock him around.

Probably is the only possible title holder to be able to fight there because of injures and others already booked for events.

Damn Jon Jones is headlining another UFC in Toronto.
If I go its going to be the third time I see him fight.
First it was vs Machida then Belfort now he is fighting Alexander Gustafsson.

Kinda disappointed with him headlining three Toronto cards in a row.
I really am hoping that Wanderlei Silva will get a fight on this card.

Close fight between Jones and Gus. I think it could of gone either way. Jones had a great 4th. All other rounds were pretty close.
Not official word on rematch. Glover might be the next one up for a title shot.

Machida’s first time at 185 hopefully the weight cut wont have a huge affect on him. He used to be the champ at 205. Winner could face the champ next year.
Pearson/Guillard is going to a great fight. These two always come to fight. FOTN for sure.
          Manuwa is always impressive.
Parke won the TV show Ultimate Fighter UK VS Australia.
Sakara used to be impressive but has lost 3 in a row.
          You got a womens fight.
Cole Miller used be decent fighter but lost 3 in the last 4 fights.
Should be a good event. Damn you are lucky. Let me know if you enjoyed it. I will be watching it at home. Do you know how close to the cage you are siting?
